Students expressed appreciation, and it immediately created a sense of comfort and care in our classroom.\r\n\r\nWe now use the snacks during key instructional times, especially during longer lessons that require sustained focus, such as reading, writing, and collaborative activities. For example, during a recent writing activity, students were able to stay engaged for a longer period of time, complete their work, and participate more actively in peer discussions. I've noticed a clear difference in their energy levels and ability to stay on task.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stood out was a student sharing how having a snack helped them feel more focused and less worried during class. That simple moment showed how much of an impact meeting a basic need can have on learning.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students will continue building their skills through reading, writing, and discussion-based lessons. These snacks will continue to support their ability to stay engaged and fully participate in their learning, especially as we work toward important academic goals. Many of you use technology in your daily lives, but in a school setting, tools like these calculators go far beyond basic computation—they help students build confidence, explore problem-solving strategies, and engage more deeply with math concepts.\r\nWith access to their own calculators, students are able to check their work in real time, experiment with different approaches, and focus more on understanding why a solution works rather than just getting the answer. This has been especially helpful for students who may struggle with math anxiety, as the calculators provide a supportive tool that reduces frustration and keeps them motivated.\r\nWhat's been most exciting is seeing how eager students are to use them. Having individual calculators has created a sense of ownership and independence. Students are more willing to participate, try challenging problems, and even help one another learn new functions.\r\nA few students in particular have really flourished. Some who were previously hesitant to engage in math activities are now volunteering to solve problems and explain their thinking. Others who already enjoyed math are diving deeper, exploring more complex problems and using the calculators to extend their learning.\r\nBecause of your support, our classroom has become a more inclusive, engaging, and confident learning environment. The same students who work jobs after school, babysit their siblings, and drive cars, were excited for tiny eraser toys. The only thing that gave them concern was that they would have to wait until after Christmas Break to get them. \r\n\r\nWhen students entered my class after break they asked two questions: Is there bellwork? (because that is how they earn class currency the easiest) and Are they here? They were so ready to look at their options that students unboxed the eraser animals and props and placed them in the PBIS Store drawers themselves. A (well-mannered) bidding war almost ensued. Luckily, the variety of options allowed every student wanting to purchase the ability to pick something they really wanted. \r\n\r\nIn all, students are begging for bellwork, pointing out other students' good deeds and hard work, as well as trying to go above and beyond on assignments to earn class currency. They are all very certain their class pets need snacks, sports equipment, and books to read, so the store drawers are always opening and closing. Students flaunt their pets on their desks and hide them around the room as a game. I am in the process of getting a secondary turtle to add to the tank. I believe having the turtle in our classroom has made the students more aware of the needs of the creatures that surround us, it has also helped them to gain a sense of responsibility for our world and the beings that inhabit it.
