Our students have spent the past few years modifying a gas-power ATV to operate as a clean solar-electric vehicle. Our third year Principles of Engineering course analyzes and improves both the mechanical and electrical components. These students study friction, gear ratio, efficiency, and learn to measure the efficiency of the vehicle through an understanding of voltage, current, power and resistance. We also have an after school racing team that competes using the vehicle at a local university each spring. An understanding of modern solar technology is vital for the growth of the Sunshine State. Over the past few years, the flexibility and efficiency of solar panels have increased, while weight and size have decreased. These panels would improve the efficiency of vehicle and allow students to measure and observe the improvements in solar technology.
