When students return next week, they'll walk into a classroom that is ready for real science investigations instead of just reading about them. Throughout the year, they'll use these materials to conduct experiments, make observations, collect data, and work together to solve scientific problems. These experiences help make abstract concepts come alive and allow students to build confidence by learning through doing.\r\n\r\nThe next step is putting these supplies to work as we kick off our first units with engaging labs that encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and teamwork. What may seem like a small resource has had a huge impact on classroom culture, motivation, and student engagement. Students love earning them, and they have quickly become something that encourages participation and builds excitement in class.\r\n\r\nOne especially memorable moment was during a review game before testing. Students were eagerly answering questions, collaborating with teammates, and cheering each other on because they knew they could earn stickers for their effort and participation. Even some of the quieter students became more involved and confident. The stickers created a fun, positive environment where students felt motivated to engage and celebrate their learning.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we plan to continue using the stickers as part of classroom incentives, interactive review activities, and goal-setting challenges throughout the year. In an alternative setting with small class sizes, maintaining an active, face-to-face connection with my students is vital. This technology allowed me to move away from the traditional whiteboard, ensuring I never had to turn my back on my students. By modeling complex concepts like budgeting and interest rates directly from my podium, I could stay engaged with my students' expressions and body language, instantly pivoting my instruction when I saw a concept wasn't clicking.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for my students was the shift from passive listening to active participation. For my ESE students, who often struggle with the fine motor skills or the social pressure of \"writing on the board\" in front of peers, the tablets provided a low-anxiety way to show their work digitally. I've seen particularly reserved students find their voice through this technology; being able to solve rational number problems on a digital canvas felt more like a modern skill and less like a chore. While the hardware has aged and now serves primarily as a \"pen mouse\" at my podium, its legacy as an invaluable teaching tool remains.","fullyFundedDate":1599665314440,"projectUrl":"project/learn-by-doing/5121774/","projectTitle":"Learn by Doing","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Hinsch","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7468612_orig.jpg?crop=2544,2544,x0,y407&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1775670806504","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mr-hinsch"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_54130","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":211,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":94,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":24,"percentWhite":57,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":5,"gradesServed":"7 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"8.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":67.8,"schoolId":54130,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about R.C.
