Many of my students struggle with reading or are hesitant to pick up a book because they have not always felt successful with reading in the past. Having books that are engaging, age-appropriate, and interesting to them helps make reading feel less like an assignment and more like something they can enjoy.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, reading gives students opportunities to practice important skills such as comprehension, vocabulary, identifying main ideas and details, making connections, and thinking critically about what they read. More importantly, students are learning that they are capable readers. I want them to experience the feeling of finishing a book and being proud of themselves for doing something they may have once thought was too difficult.\r\n\r\nSome of my students have especially enjoyed being able to choose books that match their interests. Giving students some choice has helped encourage students who normally would not consider themselves \"readers\" to pick up a book and give it a try. Seeing students become excited about a story, recommend a book to a classmate, or proudly tell me that they finished a book is incredibly meaningful.\r\n\r\nThe biggest impact of this project is helping my students build confidence, both in their reading abilities and in themselves. Every book they finish is a reminder that they can challenge themselves, persevere, and succeed. The stickers have made the journals especially fun and personal, allowing students to decorate their pages and choose stickers that represent how they are feeling or what they are learning.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, talking openly about their feelings can be difficult. Having a journal gives them another way to communicate and reflect without having to share everything out loud. I have already seen students become more willing to write about their emotions and think about how their actions affect themselves and others. Moving forward, we will continue using the journals throughout the year as we work on building stronger communication, emotional awareness, and social skills.
