Add to the OT library!\" These new books have already made such a meaningful impact on my students and therapy sessions. Reading in occupational therapy looks a little different than it might in a traditional classroom — our books become tools for movement, regulation, social-emotional learning, fine motor development, and connection. Through these stories, students are practicing skills like attention, listening, visual tracking, body awareness, emotional regulation, and following directions, all while building a love of reading.\r\n\r\nThe excitement when the books arrived was incredible. My students immediately wanted to flip through every page, point out favorite characters, and ask which books we could read first. Some students who are often hesitant to participate became much more engaged when books were incorporated into sessions. We've used the stories during movement activities, sensory-based lessons, handwriting tasks, and group discussions about emotions and problem-solving. For many students, books help make difficult skills feel approachable, playful, and meaningful.\r\n\r\nThese books will continue to support students far beyond one lesson or one school year. They are becoming a core part of our OT library and will be used to create interactive, play-based learning experiences for years to come. The moment they saw everything laid out, they immediately started asking questions, sharing ideas, and talking about who they wanted to help. It turned into such a meaningful experience because the students were not only creating something with their hands — they were learning about empathy, kindness, and community care in a very hands-on way.\r\n\r\nWe have been using the materials to create care kits while also targeting important classroom and occupational therapy skills like fine motor coordination, planning, organization, following multi-step directions, writing, and teamwork. Students practiced assembling supplies, packing items carefully, decorating notes/cards, and brainstorming encouraging messages to include for others. One of my favorite moments was hearing students thoughtfully discuss what might make someone feel comforted or supported. They took so much pride in making the kits \"just right.\"\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, there were lots of gasps, smiles, and immediate excitement to get started. Many students who are sometimes hesitant during writing or fine motor activities were especially motivated because the project felt purposeful and meaningful to them. It was incredible to watch students stay engaged for extended periods of time while working toward a real-life goal that mattered to them.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue building on these kindness and community-centered activities by expanding opportunities for students to create, collaborate, and problem solve together. We also plan to incorporate more writing, sequencing, and social-emotional learning activities connected to helping others and giving back to our community.\r\n\r\nThank you again for supporting our classroom and helping create opportunities for students to learn through meaningful, hands-on experiences. Many of my students have cognitive and physical disabilities, so having cleaning supplies donated by our generous donors has made a meaningful difference in keeping our classroom safe, clean, and accessible for everyone. We've built cleaning and organizing into our daily routine, and one moment that stood out was watching students work together after a hands-on activity to reset the room. Each student contributed in their own way, showing pride, teamwork, and growing independence as they helped care for our shared space.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate. They were eager to participate and took their roles seriously, understanding that these supplies help create a healthy, welcoming environment where they can focus and feel comfortable. For students with varying abilities, being included in these routines builds confidence and a sense of belonging. It was especially meaningful to see students encouraging one another and celebrating small successes as they worked together to keep their classroom clean and organized.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we will continue to incorporate these responsibilities into our daily classroom structure, giving students consistent opportunities to build life skills alongside their academic learning. As we move into upcoming lessons and projects, students will take on more individualized roles that match their abilities, helping them grow in independence and responsibility.
