The pencils and buckets have been useful to help make our classroom function. Having our space organized makes transitions and expectations clear. I believe that they can find success so far in sixth grade as they learn responsibility for materials. The stickers are great rewards for them. \r\n\r\nThe pens have been useful when marking up their passages during annotations for comprehension. The highlighters have also been useful in the bucket as a means to organize and use for vocabulary and identifying the main idea. We are currently writing extended metaphors using elements of nature. They really love the mini Ticonderoga erasers. Allowing them joy in the little things is important. It is so empowering for them to extend their reading and writing practice into speaking and listening. This is much needed practice for higher grades so that they know how to create projects, save their work, and then present their work to their peers using the scanner and the smartboard.\r\n\r\nMultilingual and Struggling learners are especially empowered by this unit because they get to practice and present their own work in a safe and conducive environment.
