My school is a Title 1 elementary school in an urban school district. 30% of our students are English as a Second Language students and 12% receive Special Education services. We also have an Autism program. I teach both English learners and struggling students in small groups. My students are inquisitive and embrace learning and any interactions that promote their understanding of how the world works. GB is not an ESL student, loves to talk about animals, changes 'favorite' animals on a daily basis, but is not able to complete any work independently. JPG arrived in 1st grade not able to print, but now uses creative spelling to write about what he has read and describe the world around him. My twin girls in 2nd grade just arrived with grade level education in Spanish, and are steadily learning letter - sound correspondence and sight words in English. We are fully engaged in learning and need help with manipulatives and whiteboards to promote learning.
