These new texts are introducing important skills such as building vocabulary, making predictions, identifying key details, and discussing characters and themes. Most importantly, they are helping students see reading as something enjoyable and meaningful, not just an academic task.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is now a joyful and active experience. Students eagerly select books, read independently or with partners, and participate in thoughtful conversations about what they've read. I've noticed students spending more time engaged with books, asking deeper questions, and showing greater confidence when sharing their ideas. Our classroom has truly become a community of readers.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were once hesitant to pick up a book are now among the most enthusiastic readers. One student proudly finishes book after book, while another loves sharing favorite parts of stories with classmates. During our daily Mindfulness activities, we regularly use the Conversation Cubes and the SEL Card Deck to guide discussions, reflections, and peer interactions. These tools help students practice expressing their thoughts, listening respectfully, and building empathy in a low-pressure, supportive way. In literacy lessons, resources like the Reading and Writing Prompt Cubes, Finding Evidence Comprehension Kits, and context clues task cards have strengthened students' confidence in reading comprehension and written responses. By giving students clear prompts and interactive materials, they are more willing to participate, take risks, and demonstrate their learning.\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, their reactions were overwhelmingly positive. They were happy to open the packages. They were excited by the bright colors, hands-on tools, and variety of resources, especially the cubes and task cards, which felt more like games than traditional assignments. One memorable moment occurred during a small-group SEL activity when students used the Conversation Cubes to discuss how they handle frustration during challenging reading tasks. Several students who are usually quiet shared thoughtful responses, showing increased self-awareness and respect for others' perspectives. Academically, tools like the SBAC ELA practice book, vocabulary workbooks, dictionaries, and process writing posters have helped students better understand expectations and build essential skills step by step.\r\nLooking ahead, the next steps for my students include applying these skills more independently in ongoing reading and writing projects. Students are currently using the comprehension resources, dictionaries, and vocabulary tools to support close reading of nonfiction texts and to strengthen evidence-based responses. SEL resources will continue to be woven into daily routines to reinforce positive relationships, self-regulation, and confidence. By providing interactive, differentiated, and inclusive materials, this project supports my students' unique strengths and ways of learning, helping every learner feel valued, capable, and empowered to succeed academically and socially.","fullyFundedDate":1760314298692,"projectUrl":"project/unlocking-potential-literacy-resources/9818451/","projectTitle":"Unlocking Potential: Literacy Resources for Special Education and ELA Success","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. DiCastanado","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10215481_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755828676395","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10215481"},{"teacherId":10311904,"projectId":9828378,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for making this project a reality! I love to work with whole stories, but they typically don't fit into the allotted time. The new materials that your donation made possible give the students bite-sized pieces to work with, and we can fit several into each work session.\r\nIn addition, my students who are Deaf or hard of hearing now have materials needed to ensure their hearing aids are working while they work on language and literacy skills!
