Having a full class set has completely transformed how we read and discuss literature together. This memoir has allowed my students to explore themes of identity, race, family, and resilience in ways that feel both personal and profound. Through McBride's story, students are learning how to analyze author's craft, explore dual narratives, and reflect on how culture and upbringing shape who we are.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become an active, collaborative experience. With every student holding their own copy, we're able to annotate together, engage in close reading, and have meaningful discussions that connect the text to our own lives and communities. We've also used creative writing prompts inspired by the memoir to help students express their own identities and family stories. The classroom energy is rich with empathy, curiosity, and connection.\r\n\r\nSome of my most reluctant readers have been among the most engaged during this unit. One student shared that this was the first time they saw parts of their own life reflected in a book we read in school.
