We have printed so many visual supports for our students--in color--and been able to create and adapt materials to fit their needs and interests.\r\n\r\nThe main focus of this Donors Choose project was to support language and literacy skills for students with communication disorders. We have been able to make literacy more engaging and accessible for them. \r\n\r\nIn the first photos, you will see an adapted book patterned after Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Eric Carle that I created online through LessonPix. Our first graders were learning about the solar system and this book, consisting of comb-bound color-printed and laminated pages and pictures of planets, allowed our students to engage with grade-level content in a very concrete way by moving the pieces into place on each page.\r\n\r\nIn the second photo, you will see the setting-up progress for an adapted book purchased from Panda Speech (Amanda Schaumburg). This story reinforces location concepts like under, behind, and next to with a snowman character. All of the pages and pieces have been color-printed and laminated. All that is left is to bind the book and add hook-and-loop dots to the pages and the snowman.\r\n\r\nIn the last photos, you will see a board book titled Mo in the Snow by Melanie Joyce. This is just an ordinary book that has been adapted with materials from Autism Little Learners (Tara Phillips). There is a communication board with the communication symbols \"I see\" and pictures that correspond to the story so that students can point and say short sentences like \"I see car.\" In addition, hook-and-loop dots have been added to each page to allow placement of picture symbols. \r\n\r\nAs you can see, these visual supports promote engagement with and access to language and literacy activities at the preschool and early elementary level. Thank you again, so much, for your support of my project. We are looking forward to continuing to color print, laminate, bind, and attach hook-and-loop dots to many more books!","fullyFundedDate":1742315271972,"projectUrl":"project/adapted-books-for-emerging-language/8986123/","projectTitle":"Adapted Books for Emerging Language","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Vining","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6124536_orig.jpg?crop=1638,1638,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1695318859450","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6124536"},{"teacherId":6757257,"projectId":9509875,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting my project, Back to the Basics. Because of your kindness, my elementary art classroom now has enough paper for every child—more than 500 students in grades K–5—to create their very own sketchbook. Watching each student hold a sketchbook that truly belongs to them has been incredibly meaningful. Your generosity has provided not just materials, but opportunities for creativity, confidence, and artistic growth.\r\nHaving a personal sketchbook offers countless benefits to young artists. It gives students a safe place to explore ideas freely, make mistakes without fear, and experiment with new techniques as their skills develop. Sketchbooks encourage persistence, allowing children to return to their drawings over time and see their progress right before their eyes. They also help students strengthen fine motor skills, practice visual thinking, and connect art to their personal experiences and imaginations.\r\nMost importantly, the sketchbooks have given my students a sense of ownership and pride. For many of them, this is the first time they've had a dedicated space to create art that travels with them throughout the year. Each page tells a story—of discovery, joy, curiosity, and creativity. Thank you for believing in the power of art education and for giving my students the tools they need to express themselves.
