Students today are faced with the ever-increasing pressures of standardized testing. Especially the students at my school! We have many kids that come to our K-5 school speaking little to no English. On top of the stress and difficulty of being immersed and learning a second language, they are then bombarded with testing of every kind. I have seen many, many tears. On top of all of this, our students often have a lot of trauma in their lives. This is why I feel that it is absolutely crucial our students have time for the arts. Our students NEED the freedom to express themselves, to create, to do something uninhibited by language barriers or standardized testing. They need a break from the stress and rigor of what is expected of them and the responsibilities that have been heaped onto their little shoulders. We don't have a lot of wiggle room in our school budget for the arts. My students deserve high quality art materials so that when they are creating and expressing themselves, they walk away with something they are proud of and something that will last.
