An important aspect of this program is making the math relevant to students real lives. This balances the work that they do in our adopted curriculum. We have seen a lot of success, both in how students engage with the work and in our outcomes as measured by national assessments. The LEGO that were donated are an important part of that routine. Additionally, this is a time that students are highly motivated to speak in multilingual groups. It had made such an impact on our students. We have started a new morning meeting routine in which the students share a highlight from the week. We arrived early so the students spent 20 minutes just reading to themselves. The students' favorite is probably the Lego sets. We use these as a community time at the end of the week. It is great to see students who speak different languages working together to build with the blocks. Together, these supplies add up to a welcoming, fun classroom.
