Over the past year, our school has piloted a new math program that helps students develop math understanding through concepts, fluency, and application. An important aspect of this program is making the math relevant to students real lives. The items in this project helped us to develop a routine called Three Reads in which students learn ways to approach a real life math situation. This balances the work that they do in our adopted curriculum. We have seen a lot of success, both in how students engage with the work and in our outcomes as measured by national assessments. At our school, we have been lucky to welcome a large number of newly arrived students to our community. To support them, it was important to have structures to help all our of students get to know each other. In order to accomplish this, we have established a community time in many of our elementary classes. Each Friday, the students play games with each other. Each week, we practice social emotional skills within the context of the activities. It has become one of my favorite times every week. The LEGO that were donated are an important part of that routine. Additionally, this is a time that students are highly motivated to speak in multilingual groups. It had made such an impact on our students. We have started a new morning meeting routine in which the students share a highlight from the week. Then we print out a picture using the printer from this project to commemorate the moment. Also, the students love the books! Last week, we went on a field trip to a museum. We arrived early so the students spent 20 minutes just reading to themselves. The students' favorite is probably the Lego sets. We use these as a community time at the end of the week. It is great to see students who speak different languages working together to build with the blocks. Together, these supplies add up to a welcoming, fun classroom.
