They programmed their Ozobots using color codes to demonstrate how Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars revolve around the Sun at different speeds. By using timers to track each planet's revolution time, students discovered real data: Mercury completes its orbit in just 9 seconds (fast), while Mars takes 84 seconds (slow). Since receiving these kits, my students have been experimenting with turning everyday objects into interactive devices. For our first project, students used the Makey Makey to create a playdough piano where each time they touched a playdough button, it played a key on a piano app. Next, we tested everyday classroom objects to see if they were conductors or insulators. Students discovered that graphite was a conductor. They used that knowledge to create playable musical instruments out of graphite drawings! Students have had such a fun time discovering all the possibilities Makey Makey has to offer. On the maze map, students then had to draw the color code correctly. If students completed all the steps correctly then their Ozobot Evo would make it to the end of the maze! \r\n\r\nOzobot has provided such an approachable and intuitive way for students to engage in coding that is super fun! This is an ongoing project that promotes attendance and individual participation for a collective purpose. Students are eager to come to math intervention, they are eager to learn and show that they know their multiples. Learning their multiples increases their success of working out other math problems. Knowing their multiples also provides that automaticity to pass weekly timed tests. Students across 4th and 5th grade are working hard to reach goals. Watching the Lego structure of New York City is the greatest way to encourage this kind of math growth. Also, many students have told me that they've asked their parents to get them Lego structures to work on at home. I am excited to see all of the motivation from my students.
