Rather than simply reading and analyzing texts, students became authors, illustrators, editors, and designers. They practiced skills such as developing a clear beginning, middle, and end, writing for a specific audience, revising and editing their work, choosing precise and engaging language, and using illustrations to strengthen the story. Having the materials they needed to bring their ideas to life made the project feel authentic and gave students a real sense of ownership over their work.\r\n\r\nThe project was incredibly successful, and it was exciting to see how invested students became once they realized they were creating books for actual young readers. Students worked through the challenges of drafting, revising, and making creative decisions, and many were proud to see their finished books come together. Reading and writing became hands-on, collaborative experiences as students shared ideas, gave one another feedback, and celebrated each other's finished products. The supplies provided by our donors helped turn a writing assignment into a meaningful creative experience where students could see themselves as capable authors and recognize that their stories and ideas have value. Thank you for helping make this project possible and for giving my students the opportunity to create something they could be genuinely proud of.","fullyFundedDate":1732130463900,"projectUrl":"project/childrens-book-project/8954177/","projectTitle":"Children's Book Project!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Leibowitz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8974390_orig.jpg?crop=1505,1505,x0,y281&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1690469873990","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8974390"},{"teacherId":8974390,"projectId":8955822,"letterContent":"Receiving a class set of No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference has given my students the opportunity to explore powerful ideas about courage, leadership, and using their voice to create positive change. As we read the book together, students are building important reading skills such as identifying the main idea, making connections, discussing character traits, and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text. More importantly, the stories have helped students understand that age does not determine their ability to make an impact. They are beginning to see themselves as people who can speak up, take action, and contribute to their community.\r\n\r\nHaving a book for every student has made reading a much more interactive and meaningful experience in our classroom. Students can follow along with the text, annotate, reread important passages, and turn to a partner to discuss what they notice and wonder. Our conversations have grown especially rich as students connect the experiences in the book to their own lives and to issues they care about. I have been especially excited to see students who are sometimes hesitant to participate in reading discussions become eager to share their ideas. The class set has helped make reading feel less like an assignment and more like an opportunity to discover new perspectives, ask questions, and imagine the difference they can make. Thank you for giving my students a book that is not only helping them become stronger readers, but also helping them believe that their voices matter.","fullyFundedDate":1738709035335,"projectUrl":"project/no-one-is-too-small-to-make-a-difference/8955822/","projectTitle":"No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Leibowitz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8974390_orig.jpg?crop=1505,1505,x0,y281&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1690469873990","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8974390"},{"teacherId":3888667,"projectId":9701066,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my students were able to read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir as a shared class novel, and it quickly became one of the most engaging reading experiences of the year. The book introduced students to complex skills such as close reading, tracking a multi-layered plot, analyzing character growth, and interpreting scientific concepts embedded in fiction. Students weren't just following a story - they were grappling with problem-solving, perseverance, ethical decision-making, and the power of curiosity, all through a text that challenged them while remaining incredibly accessible and exciting.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom became energetic and collaborative. Students eagerly discussed chapters, debated scientific possibilities, and asked thoughtful questions about physics, biology, and space exploration - often making connections well beyond what was required. It was common to hear comments like, \"Wait, is that science actually real?\" or to see students pausing to sketch diagrams, look up terms, or excitedly explain a concept to a classmate. For many students who don't always see themselves as \"readers,\" this book was a turning point - they were hooked, motivated, and proud of keeping up with a sophisticated novel.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who typically struggle with engagement or confidence stood out during this unit. Some who rarely volunteered began contributing enthusiastically to discussions, while others who love science but don't usually enjoy English class finally saw how storytelling and science can work together. Your support made it possible for every student to hold their own copy of this book, and that sense of ownership mattered. Thank you for helping create a joyful, challenging, and unforgettable reading experience for my students. Your support has allowed my students to add a wide range of diverse books that reflect many voices, cultures, and perspectives. These new titles help students see themselves in stories while also opening windows into experiences far beyond their own. This representation matters deeply, and it is already sparking meaningful conversations and connections in our classroom.\r\n\r\nBecause of your donation, students now have a far greater variety of choices for their independent reading. They can select books that match their interests, challenge their thinking, or help them escape into new worlds. This sense of choice empowers them as readers and encourages a love of reading that we work hard to nurture. Many students have already begun exploring genres and authors they might never have discovered without these additions.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, the themes within these books extend well beyond the classroom. They encourage students to reflect on identity, resilience, justice, empathy, and the many ways our lives connect across communities and continents. Your generosity has helped create a library that doesn't just build stronger readers—it helps build thoughtful, informed, and compassionate young people.
