My goal is to make a library area in my classroom for students to grab a novel, look through magazines, engage with nonfiction texts, etc., to increase literacy skills. We desperately need a reading program at our school, but that doesn't seem likely to happen. Also, our school library has been transformed into a media center, so there are very few books there. It's also difficult to access this room because we don't have a librarian on site. I really want to get books into the hands of students and away from screens, so they can experience the enjoyment of reading while improving their English skills. And, the library area I've created, thanks to your donations, is a huge step in the right direction !!\r\n\r\nI'm in the process of gathering books at various levels to add to the classroom library, but I am focusing on English learners who have been in the country 2-3 years (ELD2 students). These students struggle with reading and comprehension, so they just don't read. The Time for Kids, which you donated to our class, is at a second-grade level, making it much easier for ELD2 students to understand the text. With the bright, colorful pictures, shortened articles in bigger print, and high-interest readings, students are engaged in reading and feel like they are making progress in their literacy skills. I use some of the Time for Kids magazines for whole-class instruction and leave others out for kids to read for enjoyment. Having a class set of these magazines is great as students can read with a partner or with a small group.\r\n\r\nAgain, I want to thank you so much for your donation and for making a difference in my students' lives.
