When we started our novel, our students immediately fell in love with Dante more than Ari. His personality and joyful interaction with the world was in such interesting contrast with Ari's confusion and hesitance. They were equal parts enthralled and amused by the wild developments of Ari and Dante's relationship.\r\n\r\nMy favorite activity from this project was our hot take activity. Students took turns pulling topics out of my bucket. The five we did were \"middle school,\" \"cats,\" \"starbucks,\" \"loud cars,\" and \"social media.\" Then, the two teams had a representative rush up to the desk and wave the red flag before declaring their hot take on the topic. After hearing the hot take, their team has to unequivocally devote themselves to supplying arguments for that take without question and the other side has to jump to oppose the hot take. At first, they struggled. But then, the arguments became more and more interesting. For example, they felt that social media was becoming overused and harming their friendships.\r\n\r\nThey fell in love with the book and their final project was to write an analytical paragraph and to complete a research project proving or disproving their hot take. One group did their hot take on the ridiculousness of the English language. As an ELD teacher, that presentation resonated with me. They collected incredible research and found reasons to prove their argument, more than to disprove it. Their hot take video was a parody of the \"Star Spangled Banner\" that received applause from their peers.\r\n\r\nI am looking forward to doing this project again next year. I am forever grateful for the public's support of my classroom and allowing me to bring this incredible novel into the hands of our students. Then, they did further investigation into themselves in this current point in time. They chose three of eight contexts: Culture, Country, Finances, Relationships/Friendships, Parents, Family, Religion/Belief System, and Education. Then, they reflected on experiences within those contexts before researching further. For example, if they found that their ethnic identity was one where they felt torn about practicing and enjoying their cultural values in the United States, they found further information online on cultural expression in the U.S. \r\n\r\nThen, after they gathered online research, they now needed to do their own personal research into their lives. They chose family members that have impacted the trajectory of their lives and conducted interviews with them. Some of my students chose romantic partners or coaches, and others chose parents or siblings. One of them interviewed her nine-year old brother. It was wonderful to see the information they gathered from their family and they presented the highlights of their interviews to their peers.\r\n\r\nFinally, their last task was to compare these three contexts with Trevor's experience of those contexts. For example, how has Trevor's religious upbringing impacted his growth into the person he is, and how does that compare with your experience of religion? They wrote essays, using both textual evidence from Born a Crime and evidence from their family interviews and research, to prove their overall argument. \r\n\r\nI would like to report to you that this project was a success this year, and your positive impact will continue to extend into the future when I implement it again with our new students next year! I wish you the best. Previously, many students struggled with basic arithmetic, which made it difficult for them to focus on the more complex concepts in algebra. Now, with reliable calculators at their fingertips, they can focus on the problem-solving process instead of getting bogged down by arithmetic errors. The calculators have leveled the playing field, allowing all students to access the same tools and have an equal chance to succeed. This is especially important for students who may have previously felt discouraged by their struggles with math facts.\r\n\r\nWhat excites my students the most is the simplicity and reliability of these new calculators. They no longer have to worry about broken buttons or malfunctioning devices. Just knowing they have a dependable tool in hand gives them confidence to experiment and make mistakes without fear of being held back by faulty equipment. Some students who were initially hesitant about using technology in class have completely warmed up to the idea and now rely on the calculators to check their work and to help guide them through difficult problems.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, students have started to appreciate the structure these tools bring to their learning environment. With a designated space for each calculator in the classroom, they've become more responsible and mindful of taking care of the materials. I've noticed that students are excited to use the calculators because they know they are part of a system that helps them learn and grow. It's incredible to watch their confidence and independence bloom as they use these resources to solve problems on their own.","fullyFundedDate":1731540059866,"projectUrl":"project/algebra-over-arithmetic/8722866/","projectTitle":"Algebra Over Arithmetic","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lacie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5645387_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1533775358020","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lacie-caban"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4121","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1118,"numTeachers":74,"percentFrplEligible":42,"percentAsian":9,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":20,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":56,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":85.5,"schoolId":4121,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Concord High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Concord High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/mount-diablo-unified-school-district/concord-high-school/4121"}
