One group is reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle, which they are really enjoying. The other small group is reading Ramona the Pest and are also enjoying the story. In their literature circles, students read a chapter and do a fun \"job\" related to the chapter such as a connector, which is when a student makes text-text, text-world, or text-self connections with the story. Another fun job is the artist. The artist draws a scene for the chapter. Students also practice their summarizing skills as they summarize each chapter. Because of your generosity, my students were able to experience the engineering design process by creating their own toy cars from cardboard and other hands-on materials. Students planned their designs, built their cars, tested them, identified problems, and made improvements. They learned that engineering is not about getting everything right on the first try—it is about testing ideas, learning from mistakes, and finding ways to make a design better.\r\n\r\nMy students were excited when they first saw the materials and couldn't wait to start building. Throughout the project, I saw students collaborate, troubleshoot, and encourage one another as they worked to get their cars moving. Seeing students proudly test their finished cars and compare how their designs performed was a particularly rewarding moment. Many students were surprised by how much thought and problem-solving went into making something as simple as a cardboard car work successfully.\r\n\r\nNow that the project is complete, students have reflected on their designs and the challenges they encountered. They can look back at their finished cars and recognize how their ideas developed from a simple concept into a working creation. More importantly, they gained hands-on experience with creativity, perseverance, collaboration, and problem-solving.
