Many students had never read the novel before, and its engaging characters and adventures have made preparing for the competition an exciting experience. \r\n\r\nIn our classroom, students take notes, annotate their books, and participate in rich discussions about the novel. We are using the novel to explore literary terms and skills such as characterization, conflict, theme, and using textual evidence to support our ideas. These activities help students move beyond remembering what happened to explaining how and why events and characters develop. \r\n\r\nHaving enough books for every pentathlete has made a meaningful difference. In the past, students had to share copies. Using the project materials, students created a heat map to identify which areas of our campus became the hottest, making the connection between climate, their surroundings, and daily life more concrete. \r\n\r\nThis project helped students practice collecting and interpreting data, identifying patterns, and communicating their findings. Mapping temperatures gave them a meaningful way to explore how conditions can vary across a single campus. Their heat map also provided a starting point for discussing how shade, trees, and different surfaces might affect temperatures and how schools could create cooler outdoor spaces. \r\n\r\nThe technology brought a hands-on dimension to learning about climate change and gave students a way to investigate their campus through science. I use small prizes and rewards to recognize students for positive behavior, active participation, teamwork, effort, and reaching academic or classroom goals. These incentives have helped create a more positive classroom environment where students feel that their hard work and contributions are noticed and appreciated.\r\n\r\nOne of the biggest impacts has been increased motivation and engagement. Middle school students can sometimes have difficulty staying focused or finding the motivation to participate, especially when they are working through challenging assignments or projects. The incentive system gives students an additional reason to stay involved and encourages them to take ownership of their behavior and learning.
