My school is small and innovative arts pilot school located in the Northeast area of Los Angeles. Of the students who attend the middle school, 98% are eligible for free or reduced lunches. The literacy rates as they enter middle school are alarming, with many students on my caseload reading at first-third grade levels. I am a resource specialist teacher, who co-teaches in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade readers and writers workshop classes. Most of the classes I co-teach in are LTEL (Long-Term English Learner) classes and include students with learning disabilities (including auditory, visual, and attention deficits) and autism. Last year, in the seventh grade LTEL class, not one student was reading at grade level (and most students confessed that they dreaded reading), but after careful selection of engaging class texts and matching each student with their just-right levels, every student made significant gains.
