This year, my students love to read, and they are especially excited to explore chapter books such as Bad Kitty, Dragon Masters, and Surprises According to Humphrey. These books give students opportunities to practice important reading skills such as building fluency, understanding characters and their actions, identifying important events, making inferences, and discussing their thinking using evidence from the text. In our classroom, reading is an active experience, students read independently, talk about books with their classmates, share their thinking, and recommend books to one another.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting impacts has been watching students develop a sense of themselves as readers and want to share that love of reading beyond our classroom. As we form book clubs, students are eager to read the same books as their classmates and talk about their favorite characters, events, and surprises. They are also excited to bring that enthusiasm home and share their reading experiences with their parents and families. These new books are helping create a classroom community where reading is not just something students do for school, it is something they genuinely enjoy and want to share with others.","fullyFundedDate":1778176290259,"projectUrl":"project/creating-lifelong-readers-one-book-at-a/10051344/","projectTitle":"Creating Lifelong Readers, One Book at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Dominguez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5792352_orig.jpg?crop=738,738,x229,y161&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1740622213451","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-dominguez15"},{"teacherId":1903140,"projectId":9987560,"letterContent":"I am so grateful to my DonorsChoose donors for providing me with a new Apple laptop. We have been using the new resources during hands-on engineering lessons where students work collaboratively to design, build, and test solutions to real-world challenges. One memorable project involved students creating structures designed to withstand different environmental conditions, encouraging them to apply problem-solving, teamwork, and critical thinking skills while connecting science and engineering concepts to our curriculum.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate and contagious. Many students who are typically hesitant to participate became highly engaged, eager to build, experiment, and share ideas with their classmates. The LEGO kits created an inclusive learning environment where students felt comfortable taking risks, learning from mistakes, and celebrating successes together.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students will continue developing their engineering skills by improving their designs based on testing results and reflecting on what worked and what did not. Our next steps include integrating coding and more advanced design challenges so students can deepen their understanding of STEM concepts while strengthening collaboration and communication skills.
