They also created an Earth Day painting of our planet, which gave them an opportunity to connect science learning with creativity. These projects made the content more tangible and exciting, helping students build a deeper understanding of earth science concepts while staying actively involved in the learning process.\r\n\r\nStudents worked collaboratively in groups of five, with each group researching two celestial objects and then sharing their findings with the class. This structure encouraged teamwork, discussion, and accountability while also strengthening their research, reading, and writing skills. The project included both group and individual components, which allowed each student to contribute meaningfully while also demonstrating their own understanding. Some highlights included sheep eyeballs for a dissection and solar cars. We have not built the solar cars yet, but we did the eye dissection. We learned about senses and vision in science, and the students were excited to dissect an eye to see the actual parts of the eye themselves. They were shocked when I pulled a bucket of 100 eyeballs out of the cupboard! \r\n\r\nI led the students through the dissection, starting with cutting the extra fatty tissue off the sheep's eye. Then, students were able to view part of the optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain and sends information. Next, we removed the cornea, and examined the iris and the lens inside the eye. The students seemed most excited and surprised to feel how hard the lens was. Finally, they saw the retina in the back of the eye and the reflective part of the eye that nocturnal animals have, but humans do not. The students will continue learning more about how animals process information to help them survive.
