Now our classroom has become an even more hands-on, engaging space for learning about life and Earth science!\r\nWith the new terrarium and authentic mineral samples, my students have been able to explore scientific concepts in a tactile, meaningful way. Recently, we used the terrarium to observe plant growth and over several weeks. Students recorded changes, and discussed how different factors affect living organisms. In addition, the mineral samples sparked curiosity and investigation as students sorted, classified, and compared them to real-world geological formations, linking classroom learning to the natural world around them.\r\nThe students' reactions were priceless. When they first created the terrarium they wanted to care of it, and discussing every detail of the plants with each other. The mineral samples sparked lively discussion—students were amazed to hold pieces of Earth's history in their hands, touching textures, noticing colors, and asking questions about formation processes. The pyrite was especially exciting as we are reading a novel about the Gold Rush. \r\nNext, students will use these resources to deepen their understanding of ecosystems and Earth systems. They will track environmental changes in the terrarium and relate those observations to real-world ecosystems. For the mineral study, students will conduct experiments to look at the properties of minerals. They will create detailed drawings, noting properties, and connecting findings to lessons on Earth's layers. These steps will help them not only learn the science content but also practice critical thinking, observation, and scientific reasoning.\r\nYour support has truly transformed the way students experience science in our classroom. It's helped students practice skills like understanding how characters change, identifying themes, and using context clues to figure out new vocabulary. The story has also led to strong conversations about family, perseverance, and starting over.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is active and hands-on. Students read on their own, with partners, and as a whole class. They are able to go back into the book to find evidence, mark important moments, and write their thinking using sticky notes. These annotations help students track their ideas, ask questions, and prepare for discussions. Having a class set means every student can follow along, annotate their own copy, and fully participate.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have really connected with this book. Some see parts of their own family experiences in Esperanza's story, which has made them more confident and willing to share.
