We just finished learning about Paul Erdos, a mathematician that was so singularly committed to thinking about math, that he was unable to perform basic self-care tasks. This inspired a conversation with the kids about their passions and they were able to relate to thinking about something so much, that other parts of their lives seem to stay in the shadows. \r\n\r\nPaul saw math in everything around him. We asked students to reflect on their lives and to comment on where they currently could find math in their everyday activities. One child said, \"I do math when I balance on my scooter.\" Another found that she does math when she counts her stuffies. A third student noted that he counts fish when he goes fishing. \r\n\r\nChildren being able to draw connections between themselves and accomplished mathematicians is crucial to their development as confident math students. These books are helping foster these connections.","fullyFundedDate":1728015167274,"projectUrl":"project/finding-the-math-in-life-and-literature/8850829/","projectTitle":"Finding the math in life and literature!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Roth","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3066980"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_7245","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":404,"numTeachers":16,"percentFrplEligible":16,"percentAsian":7,"percentBlack":25,"percentWhite":28,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":19,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"25.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":94.1,"schoolId":7245,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Open Magnet Charter School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Open Magnet Charter School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/open-charter-magnet-elementary-school/7245"}
