Instead of just reading about forces, energy, and motion in a textbook, students have been able to test their own predictions, troubleshoot real failures, and see physics come alive in front of them.\r\n\r\nBeyond the equipment itself, this support has had a ripple effect on engagement and confidence in the classroom. Students who once saw physics as abstract or intimidating are now the first to volunteer for hands-on builds, because they know they have the tools to actually try their ideas. Students are using the cellular respiration manipulatives and learning materials to model how organisms transform energy, while connecting cellular respiration to photosynthesis and the cycling of matter. Having physical models they can manipulate has been especially helpful for students who struggle to visualize these complex processes from diagrams alone.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting parts of this project is our investigation of aerobic and anaerobic respiration using yeast beads. Students work in lab groups to collect data, look for patterns, and use their evidence to explain what is happening during cellular respiration. They have been excited to move beyond simply memorizing equations and vocabulary and actually investigate these processes through experimentation. The photosynthesis and respiration materials also help students make the important connection between how plants capture energy and how organisms access that stored energy.\r\n\r\nNext, students will use their experimental evidence to construct and revise models showing the cycling of carbon and flow of energy through living systems. They will connect what happens at the cellular level to larger concepts involving organisms and ecosystems. Using stethoscopes and pulse oximeters, students measure heart rate and blood oxygen levels and examine how these measurements change in response to activity. The large classroom timers have also transformed our learning stations by keeping groups organized, making transitions more efficient, and allowing students to focus on the investigation taking place at each station. Students were especially excited to use tools they recognized from real medical settings and immediately became curious about what their own measurements could tell them.\r\n\r\nThese resources have allowed me to make concepts such as respiration, energy use, and homeostasis much more tangible. Rather than simply reading about how the cardiovascular and respiratory systems respond to changing demands, students can collect their own data, compare results, identify patterns, and use evidence to explain what is happening inside the human body. Working in stations also encourages collaboration and gives every student an active role in the investigation.\r\n\r\nNext, students will connect their physiological observations to what is happening at the cellular level, particularly cellular respiration and the body's changing energy demands. They will analyze their data and construct evidence-based explanations that connect oxygen, respiration, heart rate, and energy use. The cell modeling materials give students another way to visualize organelles and explore the important relationship between cellular structure and function.\r\n\r\nNext, students will use what they have learned to move beyond following procedures and begin designing their own investigations into how cells respond to environmental changes. My goal is for them to ask questions, collect evidence, analyze their results, and construct scientific explanations from their findings. Rather than simply writing an answer and turning it in, students can share their thinking, challenge one another's ideas, and use evidence to improve their explanations. Their notebooks are also becoming a record of their growth as scientists, where they can document observations, data, models, and reasoning throughout the year.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue applying these skills to increasingly complex biological problems, including analyzing genetic evidence with our Making Sense of Uncertainty investigation. They will take on the role of clinical scientists, evaluate evidence about genetic variants, and defend their conclusions using CER.
