My students are 6th graders starting to discover who they are as students and as pre-teens. These are public school kids in a large urban school district. They work hard. They push themselves to think beyond our expectations. Our school has made tremendous gains in the last ten years. We were taken off of our district's chart school hit list because we've made improvements in all subgroups. Now, with budgets as tight as they are, funding for materials, supplies, and an art teacher is gone. This is the second year I've taught an art class and these kids are blowing my mind. Sixth grade is such a great time for them to have an art class because they're mot so concerned with 'being cool' yet that they will still take chances in expressing their thoughts, ideas, and experiences. This class is not arts and crafts! They are all going to pain on canvas, sculpt in wax, and have their lives changed. I'm trying to get them to see the possibilities in them that they don't know exist yet.
