With the extra \"loaner\" Chromebook and charging battery, I am able to support all my students in having the materials they need to learn. The charger is used every single class period, by between one to three students. It is able to bring a Chromebook from 0% to 60% charged in just about 30 minutes (fast charging)! \r\n\r\nHaving a charged computer supports the student not only in my class, but it helps them for the rest of their school day. \r\n\r\nRecently, I have had two students who had their Chromebooks stolen, and the school was not able to replace them yet. These students knew I had my extra Chromebook, so they were able to use it during English class. \r\n\r\nSometimes students live between two homes, and their Chromebook gets left at the other parent's house, and they arrive to school without all their materials. I helped a student on Friday (during finals) with this exact issue. He wouldn't have been able to take his English final otherwise. \r\n\r\nThe item used by the most students is the battery to charge their Chromebooks. I bring the battery with me to every class, and my students know to immediately ask if their computer needs to be charged. (It is the most used at the start of the day.) \r\n\r\nAlso, many other teachers on campus ask me about the battery, and they see the benefit of having it for students to use! \r\n\r\nI tutor in the library after school for a few days each week, and the battery gets lots of use there too. Limited outlets and students who have forgotten their charging cords means many students ask me to help them charge their device. \r\n\r\nOverall, this project has fulfilled a great need. And thank you also for your patience with my tardiness. Our book club unit is wrapping up as I write this, with students ready to share their discoveries with their classmates and indeed the rest of the school, and I must say, your contributions were a smashing success.\r\nBut let me back up a little.\r\nWe began the unit with a kind of free-for-all we called the speed-dating scavenger hunt. Students were given copies of the available books at their table, and challenged to learn as much as they could about them in a relatively short amount of time. This activity presented an opportunity to build active reading strategies from the beginning, so students think about what information is available--how can they find out where the author is from, when the book was written, what awards it's received, what genre might it be, and so on. Furthermore, they also begin to \"pre-read,\" scanning a page or two to get a feel for the book and any vocabulary challenges they might encounter. Besides developing skills that lifelong readers like you and I regularly use, this is designed to get them seeing the books as their choice rather than my assignment.\r\nBased on their choices, I am so glad we had enough of both Smaller and Smaller Circles and Patron Saints of Nothing to go around, as they were hugely popular titles! Selected by both Filipino and non-Filipino students alike, the books served to both help students feel seen and broaden their horizons as well. And oh yeah, the students liked the books too. In fact, this may be as popular as the book club unit has yet been.\r\nStudents are about to make video presentations that will become fixtures of the school library beyond the duration of this unit, so they will be spreading their love of these books--provided by you--to more and more peers as the year goes on. \r\nThank you for starting the ripple!","fullyFundedDate":1756467930057,"projectUrl":"project/powerful-stories-that-represent-our-stud/9623466/","projectTitle":"Powerful Stories that Represent our Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Montel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9167428_orig.jpg?crop=955,955,x0,y401&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1691721514271","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9167428"},{"teacherId":9031737,"projectId":9564089,"letterContent":"Thank you for resupplying my post-it note addiction! I know it's not the most environmentally sound use of materials but I do think there is something very important about tactile learning! \r\n\r\nI always need Post-it notes for our personal essay unit. Part of the writing process that I encourage is post-it publishing, which is to write and small fragments of their writing for other students to read. It helps students moved rearrnage their own stories until in ways that they could feel it come more to life than just analyze on a screen. For students who feared writing, the Post-it became a permission slip: you don't have to get it right yet, you just have to get it out. The physicality made the process less punishing, more honest. They could see their thinking take shape.\r\n\r\nBut the real surprise has been the exit-ticket wall. At the end of each period once a week, students write a reflection based on one of the 10 Authenticity Test Questions. Each week it becomes a collection of curiosity, confusion, clarity! Students read each other's notes. They respond. They build on ideas that would otherwise vanish at the bell. The wall holds the intellectual residue of the room, giving students a sense that their thinking persists, that the work matters beyond the moment.\r\n\r\nThe impact of bringing thinking back into physical space is undeniable. Students are more reflective and more collaborative. They aren't just completing assignments but they're shaping ideas with their hands, rearranging them, challenging them, and returning to them with new insight.\r\n\r\nThe Post-it notes didn't just restore the physical act of thinking. They restored the sense that thinking is something students can see, touch, and ultimately trust.","fullyFundedDate":1754966774721,"projectUrl":"project/manipulables-that-make-the-mind-grow/9564089/","projectTitle":"Manipulables That Make the Mind Grow!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Keller","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9031737_orig.jpg?crop=579,579,x163,y644&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1688145490969","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9031737"},{"teacherId":9031737,"projectId":9584117,"letterContent":"The Authenticity Test posters have become something unexpected in my classroom: not décor, but visuals to be activated on a weekly basis. When students finish an assignment or lesson for the day, they know that part of their exit ticket is to choose one of the ten questions of the authenticity and reflect on what they did. \r\n\r\nA student revising her essay pauses at the end of a writing session and chooses \"Can this help me solve a problem that is real to me?\" and connects her writing to a future career she hadn't yet admitted she wanted. Another on of my students in 12th grade who often feels overwhelmed chose the \"I'm worried about _____. Will this help me survive it?\" and they felt better about how the skill they aquired in class could be used to mitiagate her anxiety. Lastly, another student who rarely participates reads \"I really want to do________. Can this help?\" wrote about how the personal essay unit has helped them craft their first cover letter. \r\n\r\nThese questions are doing something subtle but profound: they are shifting the center of gravity from what the assignment requires to what the student desires. They're building a habit of metacognition! Students are using the posters to locate themselves inside their learning, to test whether the work aligns with their values, anxieties, hopes, and relationships.\r\n\r\nOver the semester, the posters have also been super helpful for me as a teacher, providing feedback on the lessons, because, as students will always do, they'll tell you the truth even if you don't like it! It also keeps me accountable when I frame a lesson!\r\n\r\nThe impact is simple and transformative: these framed questions are helping students understand not just what they're learning, but why it matters to their lives.","fullyFundedDate":1757180906035,"projectUrl":"project/the-10-questions-of-authenticity-reflec/9584117/","projectTitle":"The 10 Questions of Authenticity: Reflect on Your Learning!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Keller","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9031737_orig.jpg?crop=579,579,x163,y644&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1688145490969","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9031737"},{"teacherId":1241184,"projectId":9485417,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our classroom has been buzzing with creativity and collaboration!
