The classroom clock has helped everyone manage time better during activities, and even little things like tissues and treats have made a big difference in keeping our learning environment comfortable and motivating.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment was during a class activity where students were tasked with creating links between objects and their Theory of Knowledge IA prompts for their Exhibitions. They used the markers, paper, and Post-its to map out ideas and divide responsibilities. It reminded me why these resources matter so much.\r\n\r\nNext, we'll be starting a museum exhibit on Westward Expansion, where students will use these tools to create artifacts and museum labels for an engaging exhibition. Needless to say, the beanbags are a highlight of the room for tired students, and they're strategically placed near the bookshelves, so whenever they need a moment to look around and think, their gaze finds an array of stories and ideas they can explore. I wanted to wait until the book clubs were in full swing, and now that they are, the value of your gift is clear. \r\nBut let me back up a moment.\r\nWe began the unit with a kind of free-for-all we called the speed-dating scavenger hunt. Students were given copies of the available books at their table, and challenged to learn as much as they could about them in a relatively short amount of time. This activity presented an opportunity to build active reading strategies from the beginning, so students think about what information is available--how can they find out where the author is from, when the book was written, what awards it's received, what genre might it be, and so on. Furthermore, they also begin to \"pre-read,\" scanning a page or two to get a feel for the book and any vocabulary challenges they might encounter. Besides developing skills that lifelong readers like you and I regularly use, this is designed to get them seeing the books as their choice rather than my assignment. \r\nAll of which is to say, having enough copies of Curious Incident was of immense value before the unit even officially started. The attached pictures are from this stage of the process, where you can see students enthusiastically poring through the options. \r\nNow that the unit has begun, the Curious Incident clubs are loving the challenge of unpacking a story through the words of a neurodivergent narrator/protagonist and considering the implications for both the role of narrative voice as a literary concept and also their understanding of the neurodivergent people they encounter in their own lives as well. I'm looking forward to hearing the upcoming gasps as they get to the part where Christopher finds the letters, and even more when they learn the truth about who did kill Wellington! My students are thrilled to finally have the necessary equipment to grow as musicians. The beginning string players are so excited to finally have shoulder rests and shiny new rosins, and I can already see them playing more comfortably and with better posture. It was unbelievably rewarding to see students try the new shoulder rests with their violins and be shocked at the ease of playing. They expressed excitement and gratitude at being able to finally have a personal shoulder rest and rosin that they could take home to practice with. Before, we had two communal shoulder rests and a handful of broken rosins that would be shared between the 36-member orchestra, so this donation has massively benefitted our students.\r\n\r\nThe new tuners are an extraordinary improvement from our outdated and broken ones, and the students have had fun experimenting with the many advanced features. Your donations have given our orchestra students the necessary basic resources to grow as musicians, and I have already seen noticeable improvement in students' playing. I'm excited to continue seeing this growth as we move into our second semester.\r\n\r\nWe just had their Fall concert, and we are looking forward to our upcoming festival in May.
