My hope is for them to take their books home, store them and 5-10 years from now on a random day find them, sit and read how their life was during their high school years. Our journal books are a treasure filled with memories. Not only do we have approximately 50 prompts at the end of the year, we also collage the covers to make them look like a work of Art. They also learn about a variety of Art techniques, skills, and mediums while making their books. \r\nOur life book means the world to us and knowing that we have amazing supporters like you makes them even more special. My students were incredibly excited when they saw the new knitting machine, colorful yarn, stuffing, and supplies arrive. Students are learning to use the knitting machine and yarn to create handmade items that can bring comfort and joy to foster and disadvantaged youth, essential workers, hospice care recipients, chemotherapy patients, and pediatric patients. The Poly-Fil allows us to expand into soft, comforting handmade creations, while the heavy-duty storage bags help students organize and protect their materials and completed donations.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts of this project has been watching students discover that learning a new skill can also become an act of kindness. As they work together, they are practicing measurement, pattern recognition, problem-solving, fine motor skills, and creativity. They quickly learn that handmade projects do not always work perfectly the first time! They have to troubleshoot, make adjustments, start over when necessary, and persevere until they create something they are proud to give to someone else. Students are also learning responsibility by organizing supplies, caring for the equipment, and working together toward a shared goal.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue developing students' knitting and crafting skills so we can increase the number and variety of items we create and donate. As students become more confident, they will take greater responsibility for planning projects, selecting materials, creating items, and preparing our finished gifts for donation. Students can easily see where materials belong, access what they need, and help keep our shared space organized. The extension cord and charging station also provide a convenient place for students to power their devices while completing assignments, researching, collaborating, or participating in after-school activities. I have also found it difficult to ask for donations over the years as I wanted to avoid burdening others with our teams own adversity. It has been heartwarming to see and experience the generosity of the community as you assisted our team in funding this project.\r\n\r\nYou helped our team restock our volleyballs, provided us with a new ball cart to replace a broken one, and also helped us get our very first setting target (a piece of equipment that many higher level teams use to train their players). We have already started using all the equipment as our season has gotten underway. Students were extremely excited to see the new balls they received as these were the same high-quality model as the ones found at other schools. Practice has been running more efficiently with the addition of another ball cart as students have been able to gather balls more easily in between drills. The setters on the team have been enjoying the challenge of the setting target as it provides them with instant, and visible, feedback on their setting.\r\n\r\nWith the addition of this equipment, practices have become safer, more engaging, and more efficient.
