We finally got our supplies (it took some re-ordering from new vendors for stocking issues) and my students loved working with the sea turtles. They learned a lot of new vocabulary words specific to turtles, and enjoyed looking at the small details on the physical models to identify them. I was able to wrap in an element about climate change into this lesson, as using a real species allows me to contextualize the skills we learn in the biology classroom to the real world. It is my hope that I can continue adding context in the form of climate change throughout more lessons, so that students can see the impact of science on our understanding and influence on life on our planet. \r\n\r\nAlso, I will also be using these kits for an upcoming \"Discovery Night\" to share with elementary and middle school aged kids and their families! Next time I teach this lesson, I will also use the seashells for students to make their own dichotomous keys, and allow students who would rather work outside to take the field guide into the forest right behind our school and try to identify birds. I am so excited to have a myriad of choices for students to get involved in class, and for them to see themselves using these skills in a potential science career.
