Throughout the novel, students are learning important skills such as identifying main ideas and themes, analyzing characterization, making inferences, annotating important passages, and using evidence from the text to support their ideas.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is very interactive. We read together, stop to discuss important moments, highlight meaningful lines, and talk about how Esperanza's experiences shape her identity. Students also make connections between the novel and their own lives as they think about family, culture, community, growing up, and the question of who they are becoming. I especially love seeing students who do not normally consider themselves \"readers\" participate because the short chapters make the book feel approachable and give them something meaningful to discuss.\r\n\r\nYour donation has given my students more than just books—it has given them the opportunity to see reading as something they can connect to and learn from. I am incredibly grateful that each student can open their own copy, annotate, follow along, and be part of our classroom conversations. Students who haven't been able to eat are students who can't focus in class.
