Technology plays a big role in how first graders learn today. With their new headphones, they can focus on their own lessons without distraction, which helps them work more independently and build confidence in their skills. The hanging pockets have also been a wonderful addition, keeping everything organized so students know exactly where to find and store their headphones.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for my students has been putting on their very own headphones and logging into their lessons — they feel like \"big kids\" ready to work. Several of my students who usually struggle to stay on task are now much more engaged because the headphones help them tune out noise and stay focused. One student in particular, who was often distracted during reading practice, now eagerly grabs his headphones from the pocket and gets right to work. They've been exploring themes such as friendship, motherhood and survival and its allowed them to connect with other books we have read (like Wonder by RJ Palacio) and their real life experiences. \r\n\r\nThis novel study has given students more opportunities to write and journal! This has been the most exciting part to see with this novel study. Students are excited to write and reflect about our daily chapters: predicting, making connections, analyzing theme, character traits, summarizing and inferencing. Students recently reviewed their favorite major events and wrote a summary, alongside a picture to illustrate it. \r\n\r\nStudents also had an opportunity to create a paper collage using watercolor, pencils and crayons to illustrate Roz in the wild.
