I get to know my students and make connections with each one. I try to talk to each student every day. I quickly learn who I need to spend a little more time with. Every year I have about 30% of kids who come only to speak their primary language. I make learning fun in class. We learn as a class together using different modalities. We use the promethean board, we watch videos, we use our laptops as a class, so technology is part of our day. We listen to stories and play together. We read and write. We try new snacks. We are learning as a team.\r\nThis year has been a challenging year. I saw my little ones struggling with following directions, participating, and finishing classwork till the end of the day. Once I offered an afternoon snack, it changed everything. More students were finishing their work and showing focus till 1:00pm. I observed more participation when doing rug time, group work, and small groups. It is amazing what a bag of goldfish, chips, granola bars, and fruit snacks will do to a six-year-old. Students would try more and work harder. These snacks gave them an extra boost after lunch and improved my kindergarteners' work habits, social skills, and citizenship.\r\n\r\nThere will be nothing stopping them from learning. I created a \"Calming Corner\" where kids can go figure out their feeling and calm down. We have done 15 Second Step lessons revolving around feelings and belly breathing. Many of my kids depend on the \"Calming Corner\" and it would get too crowded. Therefore, when they saw the dolphin plushies and pop-its, they were beyond excited. During our \"class/family meeting,\" we discussed how to use our plushies, pop-its, and fidget spinners. I have seen many students get mad because they did not get what they wanted. Now instead of having a negative reaction, they grab their pop-it or fidget spinner and calm down. I have many kids who miss their family so when they are sad, they will get their dolphin and hold it. I learned that this makes them feel better. A little hug from their stuffed dolphin helps. \r\n\r\nI am hoping from now on, their plush dolphin will provide emotional support. There will be no distractions stopping them from learning.
