Since receiving our class set of The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard, my students read it with a curiosity that is . This not always typical. Contemporary narrative has provided them with fresh, valuable perspectives that move beyond the antiquated viewpoints often found in traditional secondary literature. By having their own copies, every student has been able to participate fully in close reading and reflective writing, ensuring that no voice is left out of the experience.\r\n\r\nThe depth of engagement has been fun to watch; the story has served as a powerful catalyst for rigorous academic discourse, spirited debates, and insightful Socratic seminars. I've watched my students masterfully navigate text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections, proving just how much they benefit from high-quality, modern storytelling. Your support hasn't just provided books, it has built a bridge for my students to strengthen their comprehension skills and grow into more confident, thoughtful readers and writers. Because you funded this project, every student in my classroom held their own copy of Into the Wild and used specialized tools to master the text.\r\n\r\nWe approached this novel through a dedicated English Language Development lens. Instead of merely skimming the chapters, the students used the materials to dissect vocabulary and analyze the specific rhetorical devices Jon Krakauer employed. Your gift provided the essential bridge that allowed my students to access complex academic language. They didn't just consume a story; they actively built the linguistic skills necessary to discuss and write about heavy themes like man versus nature and societal expectations.\r\n\r\nThe students used these resources to sharpen their critical thinking every single day. They debated the character of Chris McCandless with genuine intensity, weighing whether his journey represented noble idealism or reckless naivety. They practiced synthesizing information by connecting journal entries, interviews, and reflections. Most importantly, they improved their argumentative writing. I watched as students who previously felt intimidated by academic English used evidence from their books to support their own unique interpretations during our class seminars.\r\n\r\nOne particular moment stood out when a student used the academic structures we studied to deliver a powerful argument about the pressures of conformity. In that moment, the resources you provided transformed a standard lesson into a breakthrough in self-expression.\r\n\r\nYou gave my students the tools to find their voices and the confidence to handle a challenging college-level curriculum. Your kindness created a lasting impact on their lives as thinkers and communicators. Thank you for believing in their potential.","fullyFundedDate":1764738216825,"projectUrl":"project/dive-into-the-wild/9664030/","projectTitle":"Dive Into the Wild","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. E Quintero","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10187188_orig.jpg?crop=1144,1144,x0,y68&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755620571288","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10187188"},{"teacherId":9233208,"projectId":9470531,"letterContent":"My students and I greatly appreciate the donations we received in order to purchase the supplies that we use on a daily basis in our classroom. \r\n\r\nIt's because of generous donations from people like you that we are able to have what we need in our classes and that students have access to what they need to be successful in completing assignments. When the boxes of snacks, toiletries, chargers, and supplies arrived, the reaction from my students was exactly what you'd expect from teenagers—immediate excitement about the food and a lot of relief about the chargers. A few students jumped right in to help me unpack everything and the resource cart. High schoolers don't always say it out loud, but having a reliable, no-questions-asked spot to grab a snack or some deodorant makes a huge difference in how comfortable they feel at school.\r\n\r\nWe've been using these supplies daily, and the practical impact has been huge. When a student walks in without a pencil or paper, it's no longer a reason to stop working; they just head to the cart and grab what they need. When a student forgot breakfast and needs a snack, they know they can just run over to the cart and pick something out. Having these items on hand completely cuts out the minor daily crises that usually derail a student's productivity.\r\n\r\nIt's the end of the year, so we just wrapped up Finals Week. The classroom can get incredibly tense during exams, but the fidget toys and stress balls from your project became instant favorites. Students were grabbing them on their way in, using them at their desks to channel their nervous energy and calm down before testing.
