This book will provide many of my students with insight about a culture other than their own while also adding humor to our classroom reading list. It would pair well with Born a Crime. I also can see it working well with some of the poems I teach by Fatimah Asghar. It will challenge students perspectives and enlighten them. It will help guide their thinking about decision making and the diversity of the world around them. As a NEA Choose Fellow, I’m thinking of pairing this text with stories in the book, Tell Me Who You Are, so I can understand identity through reading various types of narrative structures. Then students will have samples read so they can begin to write their own. This is important in discovering who you are as a freshman early in high school. I think using this book will really allow them to understand how to share their stories using personality and voice in writing.
