With the help of the books from this project, I was able to create a classroom library organized by seven distinct reading genres. Books are color-coded so that students can navigate directly to an are of the room that has the types of books they are the most interested in. I was able to obtain a cozy couch and chair to make my reading corner feel more like a living room space so that students want to spend more time enjoying that are of my room.\r\n\r\nThere have been a number of unexpected benefits to the reading materials purchased by this Donor's Choose project. First, students are much more likely to try books outside of their normal (graphic novel) comfort zone. Second, students are naturally recommending books to each other after reading and 'showing off' especially attractive book covers to each other. Finally, I also teach all of the English Language Learners in the school who have especially benefitted from high-interest books that challenge their reading level. I love when students think outside the box; it shows how deeply they think as well as able to make connections across disciplines. My students were so thrilled at the start of the year to find out they'd be provided with an art journal that was all their own, and they've used them all year long to express their learning and themselves. At the start of the year, they created \"Roads of Life,\" showing their personal journeys and the paths they've taken to get to where they are today. They also responded to the journey of the character Jay in \"Patron Saints of Nothing\" over the course of the year, designing memorials, outfits, celebrations, meals, and more in their depictions of the novel. \r\n\r\nIt's a blessing to be able to work in a place and a community that supports art in such meaningful ways. It makes a huge difference for my students and for me.
