After unpacking them, I put each one in a numbered ziplock bag that is stored in the over-the-chair pocket at each student's desk. In the fall, we started using them with the IXL app to help these new English learners practice listening for English phonemes and vowel sounds. The microphones also came in handy for speaking/pronunciation tests in which students had to recite lists of words. Being able to record their pronunciation, play it for my colleagues, and sometimes try to pinpoint if a student had a speech difficulty was only possible because of the headsets. \r\n\r\nIn January, we used them for the listening and speaking portions of our super-important annual AZELLA test, which assesses the students' proficiency in English. I was glad that the students had been practicing speaking into the microphones for a few months by then (surrounded by their peers) so that they wouldn't feel self-conscious during the exam. \r\n\r\nJust recently, we were able to give our least proficient learners the chance to work with the language learning app Rosetta Stone. Using the headsets, they can listen to sentences and words being pronounced, then repeat the words into the microphones, and the app assesses their pronunciation in real time. \r\n\r\nOnce again, this classroom set of headsets has made me the envy of my colleagues (though I'm happy to share when requested) and my superiors are pleased that this technology has helped make the annual testing season easier.","fullyFundedDate":1763482500506,"projectUrl":"project/affordable-headsets-help-refugees-and-un/9870399/","projectTitle":"Affordable Headsets Help Refugees and Unaccompanied Minors Practice English Pronunciation.","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Fox","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9490314_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1710199734672","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ellenfox"},{"teacherId":9732539,"projectId":9914283,"letterContent":"I am writing to share the incredible impact of the \"Is DNA Made Up of Atoms or Molecules or Both?\" project. Upon arrival, one of our demonstration models came with a device that was broken. We worked with the company and are awaiting the second one to arrive any day now. \r\n\r\nThrough the process of building the first model, it has definitely deepened the understanding of how DNA is constructed and how chemicals are bonded together. It was not an easy task. The students moved beyond static diagram creating their own \"twisted ladder\". The Cozy Corner has given students a calm place to read, reflect, and work independently, while the Class Store allows them to earn rewards for effort, growth, and positive choices.\r\n\r\nStudents have been incredibly excited about these additions, and the sense of ownership and pride they feel in our classroom has grown so much. It really clarifies the topic being taught as well as challenges the students based on where they are in the assignment. For example for homeostasis, the students took on a role of a physician assistant to help diagnose a man who has Type II diabetes and high blood pressure.
