Having students read Toni Morrison, and really dig into the language of a true master, has been an enriching experience. Understanding that there is a world outside of Cave Creek, rich with diversity, literature, art, and diversity is imperative to these students. \r\n\r\nAs Seniors, these students are ready to go into the World and bring new ideas, thoughts, and innovation to those around them. By reading, discussing, and thinking critically-they are able to hone their skills and dig deep into the value of reading someone else's perspective. \r\n\r\nI had a student that didn't speak until we read The Lottery by Shirley Jackson in class, and now he continuously engages in our discussions. One of my only African American students wrote two pages about the poem, Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou.
