With the increasing awareness of how students' emotional and social abilities have been impacted by limited access to in-person school and the growing concerns with teen suicide, I feel more than ever that providing a classroom environment that is welcoming and calming is necessary. I have been a special education teacher for 21 years and have created classroom environments for various disabilities. I am going on a new adventure next school year and will be working with students in high school. According to my plan, I can foresee flexible seating in the classroom environment. My hope is that students will feel at home and reap the benefits of a sensory calming classroom environment. According to an article titled, “High School Flexible Seating Done Right,” teachers wonder if flexible seating would make things too causal or cause more distractions. However, teachers reported that they found a reduction in discipline and anxiety, and students appeared to be more motivated. I hope that by adding flexible seats, students can feel at home and have a stronger sense of belonging.
