We are painting tints and shades of various colors on the color wheel. With the money from Donors Choose, we purchased paint and canvas boards. It was clear that I had saved them for this special moment. I believe it helped them take the project seriously, and do their best.\r\nFor our next steps in my advanced painting class, we will be studying Georgia O'Keeffe and doing a painting project based on one of her early seashell drawings.","fullyFundedDate":1725405958694,"projectUrl":"project/give-english-language-learners-voice-thr/8727620/","projectTitle":"Give English Language Learners Voice thru Art!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mina","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5574572_orig.jpg?crop=720,720,x122,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725513689278","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5574572"},{"teacherId":7376331,"projectId":8799896,"letterContent":"It has been such a joy to have items in my class that students can access to help them more authentically build community and feel a greater sense of belonging and accomplishment in their language learning. While my students are older than traditional high school students (ranging in age from 17 to 21), they enjoy games, friendly competition and prizes in class in a fun-filled way that reminds me that despite the many heavy responsibilities they carry, they are still young at heart. As new immigrants learning English, they face a heavy intellectual load as they work towards their high school diploma in a new language. \r\n\r\nThe new infusion of games, prizes, and supplies for warm drinks has helped me to make my classroom a more joyful and student-centered space. (I think this is one reason that students gravitate towards our space when they have some free time during school). To see them sitting down in a mixed-language group to play a game of Uno (while also arguing over the rules...in English!) is so fantastic. Especially in these dark days of Minnesota winters, we are lighting up with smiles and fun, and I have not had to drain my own pay check to make it happen. Thanks so much.","fullyFundedDate":1727003425723,"projectUrl":"project/more-inclusive-prizes-warm-drinks-and-l/8799896/","projectTitle":"More Inclusive Prizes, Warm Drinks and Language Games in Class!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. H-F","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7376331"},{"teacherId":7376331,"projectId":8736520,"letterContent":"Adding some more physical dictionaries has been great in my class--we use them just about every week, either as part of an assignment I'm giving directly in my class, or for everyday conversations or when students are working on assignments for other classes in my room. It's often easier to pull out the book rather than opening their chromebooks and logging on, and it helps to have this alternative in our learning community that is trying to promote a 'no phone in class' policy. \r\n\r\nMy students LOVE to get snacks during class. This really helps to increase motivation and bridge the gap between when they last ate (meal break during the night shift?) and lunch time. Furthermore, the lunches that our school provides to our students (via a vendor at the community college where we are located) is often unfamilar to our recently-arrived immigrant students, and unappealing. I know my students are regularly feeling hungry throughout the school day, and being able to give a snack in class communicates to them that I see them and I want them to feel more comfortable. \r\n\r\nSo far, we have had a post-election day warm drink/snacks morning, and also have had snacks as a part of a prize option when playing games on teams. I continue to be amazed and impressed by how easy it is for us all to build community by sharing food together. It truly unites people, and makes school feel more welcoming. This was really important as we entered into this new season of even more uncertainly about what the future holds. What words can not always clearly express across our divides of language and culture--offering a snack, a warm drink and a smile is easily understood.","fullyFundedDate":1725855470510,"projectUrl":"project/connecting-through-snacks-and-non-digita/8736520/","projectTitle":"Connecting Through Snacks and Non-Digital Dictionaries (Phones Away!)","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. H-F","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7376331"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_72236","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":127,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":57,"percentAsian":10,"percentBlack":12,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":74,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"4.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":61.6,"schoolId":72236,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Wellstone International High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Wellstone International High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/minnesota/minneapolis-public-schools/wellstone-int-l-high-school/72236"}
