I am the Special Education teacher in a school for English Language learners ages 17-21. I love my job and I feel like I am traveling every day! Our school is very global and I hear many languages in the hallways and in my room, including Oromo, Somali, Amharic, Spanish, K'iche', Mam, Chinese French and Nepali. We use a resource room model, so students are coming in and out of the room throughout the day with needs in the areas of Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Blind/Visually Impaired, Physical Impairment, Speech, Learning Disabled and Developmental Cognitive Disability. We also have students with mental illnesses and behavior regulation challenges that we serve under the Emotional Behavioral Disorder label. Many of the students come from places where disability rights are limited or nonexistent, so part of my role is educating about the US system and transitioning them to a different kind of independence.
