After experiencing unexpected flood damage, many of the materials that supported our daily routines and social-emotional learning were lost. Because of you, we are able to rebuild and continue this important work with our students.\r\n\r\nThe materials you helped replace are more than just classroom supplies—they are tools that guide students in learning how to care for one another, show responsibility, and make positive choices. Through our classroom kindness initiative and connection to our school's PAWS program, students engage in meaningful, hands-on experiences that promote cooperation and compassion. Our classroom animals, in particular, provide unique opportunities for students to practice nurturing behaviors and develop a sense of responsibility.\r\n\r\nWith these resources restored, students are once again actively practicing what it means to be part of a respectful and supportive community. They are learning to be patient, to help one another, and to treat both people and animals with kindness.\r\n\r\nYour support has helped turn a challenging situation into a powerful opportunity for growth. By using tweezers and small manipulatives, students develop hand strength, coordination, and control that are essential for writing, cutting, and completing classroom tasks with confidence.\r\n\r\nThe hands-on STEM challenge has encouraged students to think critically, solve problems, and work through trial and error. As they sorted, transferred, and built with these materials, they practiced planning, testing ideas, and revising their work, which helped develop perseverance and resilience.\r\n\r\nBeyond the academic benefits, these activities made learning engaging and interactive. The students made air-dry clay snowmen while learning about balance, structure, and design (even if they didn't realize they were doing \"engineering\" at the time!). The fake snow kit was a huge hit. We turned it into a class experiment where students made predictions, mixed the materials, and observed what happened. There were lots of \"oohs\" and \"whoas\" as the snow grew! We've also been using a few small prizes as incentives for teamwork and effort, which has helped keep everyone motivated and excited to participate.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, they were beyond excited. You would have thought it was Christmas morning! Many of them had never used air-dry clay or instant snow before, so everything felt brand new and special. What may seem like a simple item is truly the heart of our classroom.\r\n\r\nIn first grade, so much of our learning happens together on the carpet. It is where we gather for morning meetings, build community, practice phonics skills, share stories, and celebrate accomplishments. It is where my students sit shoulder-to-shoulder as we track words in a big book, sound out new blends, and grow into confident readers.\r\n\r\nHaving a designated, comfortable meeting space helps my students focus and feel secure. At six and seven years old, structure and routine are essential. The carpet creates a clear learning area where they know it is time to listen, participate, and engage. It allows me to teach more effectively because I can be close to them, see their thinking, and support them in the moment.\r\n\r\nBeyond academics, the carpet builds connection. It is where we learn to take turns, listen respectfully, solve problems, and encourage one another. It becomes a safe space where every child feels included and valued.\r\n\r\nYour generosity does more than provide a classroom resource — it helps create a warm, welcoming environment where young learners can thrive. The display has brought even more attention to our growing collection and has made choosing a new book feel special and exciting.\r\n\r\nWe are using the bookshelf during independent reading and book selection time. Your donation of cardboard building supplies has helped spark a strong focus on creativity and design this month. Students were inspired after viewing another class's cardboard creations, which encouraged them to think more deeply about structure, design, and originality. Building on this excitement, students were given an at-home assignment to design and create their own cardboard projects, allowing them to extend their creativity beyond the classroom and involve their families in the process.\r\n\r\nIn addition, students participated in a reading lesson about architect Antoni Gaudí, where we studied his unique artistic style and use of mosaics.
