With the new supplies, students in first grade last year have had experiences learning about butterfly habitats, planting seeds, creating butterfly habitat art, and planting seedlings out into our community garden. I will be repeating the unit with this years' first graders, as well. \r\nThe seed-starting supplies and butterfly/caterpillar habitat was an exciting addition to this unit on animal habitats. First grade students learn about animal habitats in their ELA curriculum, and our art curriculum draws connections to their reading and writing. By studying butterflies in the art room, we were able to plant seeds for a butterfly garden, and transplant the seedlings into the garden when they were ready. The students also got to observe caterpillars in the studio, and see them hatch into butterflies! Once transformed, we released the butterflies into our garden area.\r\n\r\nStudents absolutely loved the art-science connection, and our ability to have a hands-on encounter with butterflies, seeds, soil and plants was only possible due to your generous donations. With the new supplies, students from kindergarten through 6th grade have had experiences using classic printmaking tools. \r\nIn addition to creating relief prints, students use the brayers often for a variety of painting applications and sometimes for rolling out clay and play-doh. Students love using \"rollers\" and having these standard tools in the art room elevates our creative experiences. \r\nOne great project second graders were able to accomplish was fulfilling a unit in printmaking and insects. Students drew a honey bee and transferred their drawing onto a foam printing plate with pencil. Then, the students cut out their bee, and used this printing plate to create multiple prints. These young students absolutely loved the artistic process of drawing and transferring, rolling ink and printing their design multiple times. As a result, we were able to create a whole hive of honeybees!\r\nThe best part about having ink, brayers, and printing foam, is the fact that these materials will serve students for years. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by numbers, steps, and materials, students now have structured systems that help them break down problems and stay focused from start to finish.\r\n\r\nWe are already seeing a powerful impact.
