For many of these students, especially in a Title I school setting where resources can be limited, access to updated, professional-grade materials made a noticeable difference in both instruction and confidence. The arrival of new mannequins, styling tools, and salon vests elevated the classroom from a basic training space into something that more closely mirrors a real-world salon environment. That shift matters—students aren't just practicing techniques, they're building career-ready skills in conditions that feel authentic and purposeful.\r\n\r\nBeyond the equipment itself, the excitement and pride it sparked in students was just as important. There was a clear sense of motivation when they saw the upgraded materials waiting for them—like their learning was being invested in and valued. It strengthened engagement, increased participation, and helped students take greater ownership of their craft. In practical terms, the donation helped close an opportunity gap, ensuring that students have equitable access to tools that prepare them for licensure, employment, and future success in the beauty industry.","fullyFundedDate":1776536194562,"projectUrl":"project/from-the-classroom-to-the-salon-equippi/10006960/","projectTitle":"From the Classroom to the Salon: Equipping Future VA Cosmetologists","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. C. Without amplification, even our strongest presenters were being limited by something as simple as volume. Students in the back of the room, visiting judges, and peers often struggled to hear details about product design, pricing strategy, and financial projections. That takes away from both learning and confidence.\r\n\r\nWith microphones, students are able to project clearly and professionally. It immediately raises the level of the experience—students stop \"talking in class\" and start presenting like founders in a startup incubator. That shift matters. It builds communication skills, stage presence, and confidence that transfers far beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nThe other materials included in this request supported the full pitch ecosystem. Students weren't just speaking; they were building real business concepts, designing visuals, and defending their ideas under questioning. Having reliable equipment ensured that every student—regardless of voice level, anxiety, or seating position—had an equal opportunity to be heard and evaluated fairly.\r\n\r\nThis donation also strengthened classroom equity. A clean and organized workspace allows students to focus on their digital projects, collaborate more effectively, and take greater pride in their classroom. These experiences strengthened not only their computational thinking skills but also their confidence as learners.\r\n\r\nAs students became more comfortable with coding, many emerged as classroom experts who eagerly supported their peers. It was exciting to watch students collaborate and celebrate successes together. \r\n\r\nToward the end of the school year, when energy and motivation can sometimes decline, programming the Cutebots brought renewed excitement to the classroom. Our final project this year was creating Hogwarts suitcases filled with different types of information connected to our reading and learning. What began as a literacy activity quickly transformed into something much more creative and meaningful. Students who were hesitant to write full paragraphs were suddenly eager to add colors, symbols, labels, and details to their work while discussing characters and ideas together.\r\n\r\nMuch like students waiting for an owl from Hogwarts, many of our multilingual learners are still discovering their own voices and confidence. No matter how many appear, they somehow vanish into backpacks, hoodie pockets, and perhaps another dimension entirely. Thank you for helping place these stories into the hands of our students.\r\n\r\nThis year, students became incredibly curious about the graphic versions of Lord of the Flies, Edgar Allan Poe stories, and Animal Farm. After watching a fun Flocabulary video connected to Edgar Allan Poe, students were suddenly eager to flip through the graphic collection, study the illustrations, and talk about the stories together. The visuals gave students confidence to explore texts that might otherwise feel intimidating.\r\n\r\nThe excitement around these books has already begun spreading through our academy. Our ELL Honors English 10 team is hoping to use the graphic version of Lord of the Flies next year, and teachers have also started talking about ways Animal Farm could support comprehension and discussion for multilingual learners.\r\n\r\nWhat excites me most is thinking about introducing these stories from the very beginning of next year. I cannot wait to help students explore mood, tone, symbolism, and suspense through books that feel engaging and accessible. Graphic adaptations give students a bridge into rich literature while still honoring the depth and complexity of the original stories.\r\n\r\nSometimes all it takes is one intriguing illustration, one eerie raven, or one island fire in the distance to make a student want to keep turning the page.","fullyFundedDate":1773851018843,"projectUrl":"project/whispers-in-the-pages/10112701/","projectTitle":"Whispers in the Pages","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Preston","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4607_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1510611246709","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/preston"},{"teacherId":4607,"projectId":10141035,"letterContent":"May your kindness travel farther than Captain Nemo, deeper than Professor Lidenbrock, and swifter than Phileas Fogg. Even generations later, classic journeys still awaken curiosity and wonder.\r\n\r\nThis year, we only had a chance to dabble with graphic novels and adapted classic books near the end of the school year, but the impact was immediate. Students who would normally avoid books were suddenly flipping through pages, studying the illustrations, pointing at pictures, and trying to talk about the stories in English.\r\n\r\nBooks like Can You Survive 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Around the World in 80 Days gave students a way into reading that did not feel overwhelming. The visuals helped students understand the stories, practice speaking, sequence events, and build confidence.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments happened when a 12th grade ELL teacher in our academy was reading Call of the Wild with students. I was able to share the graphic version with her class, giving students another bridge into understanding the story.\r\n\r\nWhat excites me most is beginning next year with these books already in our classroom library.
