Students were excited to see their ideas come to life through hands-on STEM experiences that made learning feel meaningful, engaging, and authentic. The addition of a multi-color 3D printer gave students opportunities to design, problem-solve, revise, and create in ways that strengthened both their academic skills and their confidence.\r\n\r\nStudents used Tinkercad and other digital design tools to create original models and prototypes connected to engineering, entrepreneurship, and cross-curricular learning. Watching their digital designs become tangible creations helped students develop perseverance, critical thinking, and pride in their work. Many students who were initially hesitant to take academic risks became more willing to experiment, collaborate, and share their ideas with others.\r\n\r\nThe makerspace also strengthened classroom community and collaboration. Students worked together to troubleshoot problems, exchange ideas, and support one another through the design process. They learned that innovation often requires patience, teamwork, and resilience. These experiences encouraged students to think like engineers, inventors, and entrepreneurs while also building communication and leadership skills.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting outcomes was students designing personalized keychains and backpack tags to sell to students, staff, and community members. This gave students authentic opportunities to explore entrepreneurship, financial literacy, branding, and product development while seeing the real-world value of their creativity and effort.\r\n\r\nBecause this project directly served historically underfunded classrooms and students from low-income households, it also helped close opportunity gaps by providing access to advanced technology that many students may not otherwise experience. For many of my scholars, having access to personal care items like combs and brushes was not something they could always count on at home. By providing private, culturally affirming grooming kits tailored to their individual hair textures and needs, this project helped students feel seen, respected, and cared for in a meaningful way.\r\n\r\nWhen students felt confident about their appearance, it directly impacted how they engaged in the classroom. Scholars who felt good about themselves were more likely to participate in discussions, read aloud, collaborate with peers, present their ideas, and take academic risks. These kits helped remove small but significant barriers that affected students' self-esteem and focus throughout the school day.\r\n\r\nThis project also reinforced important life skills and habits. Students learned responsibility, self-care, and pride in their personal appearance while embracing and celebrating their natural hair and cultural identity. The message behind this project was powerful: they were worthy of care, dignity, and confidence exactly as they were.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these grooming kits helped create a classroom environment where students showed up feeling prepared, empowered, and ready to succeed. The impact extended beyond academics—it nurtured emotional well-being, built self-worth, and reminded students that they mattered. Through this project, scholars gained more than grooming tools; they gained confidence that they carried with them long after they left the classroom and that they will continue to carry with them.","fullyFundedDate":1766243961992,"projectUrl":"project/always-proud-to-be-me-grooming-kits-for/9937895/","projectTitle":"Always Proud to Be Me: Grooming Kits for Confidence","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gamble","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2218800_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1506354198147","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lorna-gamble"},{"teacherId":2218800,"projectId":9348494,"letterContent":"As we read this compelling novel, set in 1980s Harlem, that follows a young Black girl navigating the challenges of identity, grief, and belonging while also exploring Afrofuturism and the legacy of space exploration that complemented the themes in our HMH Into Literature curriculum, we particularly focused on diverse perspectives, personal narratives, and social change.\r\n\r\nWe had many discussions around racial justice, intersectionality, and the importance of embracing cultural heritage.
