This project became an unforgettable hands-on learning experience for my middle school students. Throughout the school year, students participated in a classroom economy where they learned real-world financial responsibility. Each student managed an online bank account and checking account, earned \"income\" through classroom jobs, sports, clubs, and positive contributions to our school community, and paid monthly expenses such as rent for their classroom desk. Students learned budgeting, saving, spending, taxes, and financial planning through a realistic experience!\r\n\r\nThroughout the year, I held mini classroom stores where they used their money to purchase snacks and candy. In doing this sparatically thoughtout the year, students learned the value of financial decision making. Some students chose to save their money all year for the classroom auction, while others learned valuable lessons about impulse spending and budgeting after quickly spending their money. In April, students completed taxes using a 1040 tax form and even received classroom \"tax write-offs\" for community service they completed throughout the year. At the end of the school year, we wrapped up the project with a whole-class auction where students could spend the money they earned all year on toys, games, gift cards, and the most sought-after prize — Apple AirPods! The students went CRAZY over them! \r\n\r\nWatching students become excited about managing money responsibly was incredibly rewarding and meant the world to me! I saw many students who may not typically thrive with traditional instruction become deeply engaged, invested, and confident discussing budgeting, taxes, savings goals, and financial decisions. Thank you for helping create this experience that gave my students practical life skills they will carry with them long after they leave my classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1764709892127,"projectUrl":"project/banking-on-bright-futures-financial-lit/9717235/","projectTitle":"Banking on Bright Futures: Financial Literacy in Action","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Nation","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7499947_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y123&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757974089708","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7499947"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_57984","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":761,"numTeachers":49,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":25,"percentWhite":49,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":14,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":6,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"15.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":67.8,"schoolId":57984,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Southern Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Southern Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/kentucky/fayette-county-public-schools/southern-middle-school/57984"}
