Many are discovering a love of reading simply because they can finally see themselves in the pages or explore worlds they hadn't encountered before.\r\n\r\nYour support is helping to build not only stronger readers, but more empathetic and thoughtful individuals. Comprehensible input is the theory behind humans naturally learn language. Essentially, the brain is programmed to connect auditory stimuli with visual stimuli in meaningful interactions and turn these experiences into language. For example, if someone shows me a plate of food and says the word \"burrito\" my brain will naturally associate the two. With more abstract language, it's more difficult but it all builds from the basics--things and actions (nouns and verbs). The curriculum includes daily lessons that introduce a limited set of vocabulary words with meaningful visual and auditory experiences. The daily lessons build on each other in short units. The curriculum comes with engaging games, music, video, and cultural pieces. Having all of these foundational pieces together allows me, the teacher, to expand and differentiate for the needs and interests of the students.\r\n\r\nMy students are most excited to be learning easily. Many students have heard the stories about how language can be difficult to learn. The only students struggling in my classes are those that aren't able to attend regularly. I work with them using technology and 1:1 coaching to help them succeed. The time this takes is made available by having the accessible and complete curriculum.\r\n\r\nStudents also enjoy the games, music, and cultural pieces. Some of these games are ones that I have invented or adapted from other subject areas (ie., physical education)--again, the time to do this comes from the curriculum you donated for.\r\n\r\nAbout 10% of my classes typically have some sort of special learning situation. I'm thrilled to say that these students are able to learn using this curriculum, as well. In addition, I am able to build tools for these students to access learning better. For example, my students who struggle with visually decoding words are supported with audio recordings of the vocabulary words accompanied by pictures. These aids help all students learn, and I am thrilled to have the time and resources to make them available.\r\n\r\nAbout 80% of my language classes are what I might call \"normal language learners\" while 10% or less are linguists. The 80% of students typically struggle to learn the language of grammar, and then convert that learning into practice. This curriculum works with the way the 80% of students learn--through experiencing language in a way that they can make sense of it. The 10% of students who are able to learn a language through grammar can sometimes be bored with this curriculum. However, given the fully resourced curriculum, I have time to build in grammar boosts and advanced learning topics to give them something to work on.\r\n\r\nWhen I first started teaching, my mentor teacher told me that there would come a day when I was teaching my 20th first Spanish I class. She encouraged me to remember that this class would be the first class for each student. She reminded me that they would deserve the best first class I could give them. Thank you for helping me have the tools to make each class the best first class my students can have.","fullyFundedDate":1771367210270,"projectUrl":"project/lets-learn-language-naturally/10086920/","projectTitle":"Let's Learn Language Naturally!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Rice","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4829022"},{"teacherId":301993,"projectId":9596641,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity in supporting my classroom and students. \r\n\r\nThanks to your kindness, I was able to purchase brand new copies of texts for my AP Literature and Composition students. For students who have a hard time picking out a book that is just the right fit for them, having access to a bunch of grade options from a wide variety of genres makes it much more likely that the book that sets them on the path to becoming a lifelong reader will end up in their hands. \r\n\r\nWe give students about 10 minutes at the start of each class to read a book of their own choice. The hope is that this reading time sparks reading that that sneaks into the rest of our students' day. For the more reluctant readers, showing up with their choice book is sometimes a barrier. I have shown a few students this shipment of books that has officially started a real classroom library, and they were genuinely pumped to see what we have. I love to read and I wanted to find a way to get more students in my classroom interested in reading too. It is not often that students in history classes are reading books therefore it was important that I find one that would be engaging for everyone. The book, Sapiens has lots of different historical chapters that are covered. This allowed me to use the book with both my 9th as well as my 11th grade students. \r\nThe book was first used with my 9th grade students to learn more about the agricultural revolution. We specifically look at the domestication of animals as well as crop development. Reading this graphic novel section allowed students to see how these developments have impacted us today. I also used the section on segregation with my 11th grade students as we dived into examining Reconstruction and its aftermath with civil rights. \r\nI am excited to continue to use the books as supplemental material for lessons that are being taught.
