In 2018, we launched a summer reading initiative at our high school where students volunteered to read a book and participate in one of 17 different staff-led book chats. We were able to provide books for six of the books groups, but for the other 11 groups, students had to purchase their own books. We are hoping to create more summer reading book groups this year and to be able to provide books for students so they do not have to buy a book to participate. Our goal is to increase participation from 15% to 30%. Staff members volunteer to read a chosen book and organize the book group. Students sign up to read the book over the summer, and they agree to meet for one hour with the book group to chat about it. For example, last year one group read Young Men and Fire by Norman Maclean - that group met outside at school, and they were joined by two Maine State Wardens who talked with them about the book and demonstrated the forestry firefighting equipment!
