My students struggle with basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They are often doing addition and subtraction on their fingers. The students quickly learn the concepts, and building automaticity (math facts) takes a long time. It also requires lots of manipulatives. How long does it take to count up four groups of 20 poker chips? Doing long division requires division, multiplication, and subtraction for each step! More sophisticated math applications (mean, creating a percentage) are almost impossible to do quickly. These calculators will allow my students to learn more challenging concepts even though they don't yet know their math facts. The drill card packs will help my students learn their math facts so they don't need the calculators anymore.
