Nothing makes science more memorable than labs, especially the labs that have fire or explosions. We use mossy zinc and hydrochloric acid to create an explosive demo! During our Physical and Chemical Change unit, we observe and write physical properties of them. Then we mix them together and observe the chemical changes occuring. As the reaction occurs, it produces a gas, (hydrogen), which we capture in a balloon. After the balloon is full, we light it with a match (from far away) to create a fireball. The students remember this demo for the rest of their lives, and I allow them to record it on their phones. Students post it to their \"reels\" or \"stories\" when they get home. That's how you know they are excited about science. . . When they post it to their social media accounts. My students love playing this game in advisory and during Socials. The games are used most often when my PAC students bring the games to the 6th grade advisory they are mentoring. My PAC students do an activity with their 6th grade advisory every week, and this game is the most popular choice. This game is fun with a large group of people, and helps build a sense of community with the 6th graders. The joy and laughter from playing these games will create lasting memories for our students. We use both of these frequently throughout the year. We use the neon markers to write on our black lab tables. The students can draw models of atoms, balance equations, and make food webs on their tables. The neon stands out, and they would rather write on the tables instead of on a worksheet. I love it because I can walk around and easily see who knows the material by glancing at their table. We also use the colored pencils quite a bit. I've uploaded a picture of a \"One Pager\", which is a review activity. Students are given a list of things to include, and create a colorful, creative \"poster\" showing everything they know about the topic. They spend a few days on this and my students who are artistic love it. We also use the colored pencils for drawing diagrams and color coding things in our Interactive Notebooks.
