Because of your generosity, my students now have books filled with characters who look like them, share their backgrounds, and reflect their families and communities. For many of my Hispanic and Black students, seeing themselves on the page as the heroes, problem solvers, and storytellers has been powerful. When the books arrived, students immediately began flipping through the pages and pointing to characters. That sense of belonging is the foundation of a lifelong love of reading, and you gave it to them.\r\n\r\nThe note-taking coloring books have become one of our most useful classroom tools. They give students a creative, low-pressure way to practice (summarizing, identifying main concepts, recording key details, or organizing their thinking and equations). Students color while they listen, read, and write, which keeps them engaged and helps their ideas stick. Even my students who usually feel hesitant about writing have started filling their pages with sketches, labels, and short notes, because the format feels playful instead of intimidating.\r\n\r\nOur math career book bundles have been just as exciting. They show how real professionals, such as chefs, nurses, builders, or engineers, use math in their daily work. Students are learning that fractions, measurement, and problem solving are not just things we do at school, but tools people use every day. We have had great discussions about which jobs our students might want one day and which math skills they will need to get there. These books have helped students see math as a doorway to their futures rather than a subject to get through.\r\n\r\nStudents now choose to settle into our reading time with a book in hand, trade recommendations with classmates, and ask thoughtful questions about what they read. The room is quieter in the best way, filled with curiosity and a willingness to want to learn. Whether they are coloring their notes, discussing a character's choices, or solving a real-world math problem from one of our career books, they are actively thinking and sharing their ideas.\r\n\r\nOne of my students used to struggle to stay focused. Now, she shares facts from the career books or expresses her excitement when she recognized an example of a check and made a connection with seeing her dad's check book. Moments like that remind me how much of a difference the right books can make, and how much it matters for children to feel seen in what they read.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and showing them what is possible. Because of you, they are reading with more confidence, writing with more creativity, and dreaming bigger about their futures.
