We had already had a class discussion about the project. Students had researched charities that are helping the victims of Hurricane Helene. I had a few stragglers who hadn't completed their charity research worksheets and planning pages. Some kids really hate to write and research. When they saw the bowls, they were hooked! I had 100% turn in their work. \r\nGlazing the bowls was a new challenge for my students. Glaze and bisque bowls are beyond our budget. (So when I say \"we couldn't have done it without you- I mean literally!) A few students were inspired by an artist we studied (Roberto Lugo). They made bowls that reflected ideas about their identity. We had lots of floral designs. Several with fish, a few with dragons and even one made by blowing bubbles by a kid with a broken arm! All of them were so beautiful. \r\nwhen it came time for students to put their work up for sale, many of them were reluctant to let it go. This is a project that has never been done at our school before. And I think that they grew quite attached to their work. So I offered them an opportunity to find someone, usually a parent or guardian to sponsor them. If students would send me a receipt for one of the charities we had chosen, I would allow them to take their own bowl home. So far, we have raised money for World Central kitchen, the Red Cross, Beloved Asheville, and a group called \"Best Friends\" that rescues animals in the area. Our total is about $300 right now. When we come back from holiday break, I will open up the bowl sale to the general public and hope to receive more donations. \r\nThe lessons my students learned about philanthropy are ones I hope they keep forever. I am proud to have kids who care about others. I am excited they have learned about using Charity Navigator to learn about doing the most good with donations. \r\nI am also grateful that I could teach them about the generosity of the Allstate Foundation.
