As part of our unit on sustaining life beyond Earth, students designed and tested their own 3D-printed components for hydroponic and semi-hydroponic growing systems. They explored how to grow plants in environments without traditional soil, creating custom structures to support roots, manage water flow, and optimize growing conditions. Students iterated on their designs, troubleshooting challenges and refining their models through real-world testing.\r\nWhen the materials were introduced, the excitement was immediate. Many students had never seen 3D printing applied in this way, and for most, it was their first time designing something with a real-world purpose. Watching them go from uncertainty to confidently creating functional components was a powerful moment.\r\nIn my 10th grade Chemistry classes, students used these tools to connect scientific concepts with design. They created and tested systems that incorporated different substrates and monitored how variables like nutrient solutions and pH levels impacted plant growth. The ability to design custom components allowed them to think more critically about how chemistry directly influences system performance.\r\nLooking ahead, we will continue refining our designs, collecting data, and improving our hydroponic systems. Future students will build on this work, using 3D printing to solve new challenges related to sustainability, agriculture, and environmental science.\r\nEven though you remain anonymous, please know that your generosity has created meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that inspire innovation and problem-solving. In Earth and Space Science, we explored the concept of migrating to a planet without soil. Using the indoor greenhouse system, students designed and tested different substrate mixtures to grow plants. They were able to manipulate environmental factors like humidity and light, and experiment with semi-hydroponic and fully hydroponic systems. One of the most powerful moments came when students began troubleshooting their own plant growth challenges—adjusting mixtures, testing new ideas, and learning through trial and error just like real scientists.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the reaction was incredible. About 95% of my students had never even heard of indoor greenhouses, and none had experience using materials like LECA, perlite, or charcoal in plant systems. Even more striking, nearly 90% had never planted anything before. Watching their curiosity spark and their confidence grow as they explored these unfamiliar tools was truly rewarding.\r\n\r\nIn my Chemistry classes, students used the materials to develop and test natural fertilizers, carefully observing how different compositions affected plant growth. They also experimented with altering soil pH, connecting their understanding of acids and bases to real-world applications. These hands-on investigations brought abstract concepts to life in a meaningful way.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we will continue building on this work by refining our growing systems, collecting long-term data, and applying our findings to new experiments. Future students will benefit from these resources as they explore sustainability, environmental science, and chemistry through authentic, hands-on learning.\r\n\r\nYour support has opened the door to experiences my students would not have otherwise had. These activities allow students to learn through observation, experimentation, and trial and error—just like real scientists.\r\nBoth contents were able to build on knowledge and experience they achieved while using the materials.
